David Rodigan

Rodigan.jpg

For over 40 years David Rodigan has been the top dog in the ganja-scented, bass heavy-atmosphere of Britain’s reggae dance-halls. The key to his success has been an unsinkable passion for reggae music, which first took a hold of him as a schoolboy when he heard ska music in the early ’60s. He developed an obsession with the music of Jamaica that generated an encyclopaedic knowledge of the island’s every artist, every song and every rhythm track.

His earliest experience of dee jaying was during lunch breaks once a week in the gym at Gosford Hill School in Kidlington, Oxford. On leaving school he landed a place at the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in 1971, where he spent three years studying to become an actor. He worked extensively in repertory theatre and appeared in a number of television productions such as ‘Doctor Who’ (BBC) and ‘Shackleton’ (BBC); he also performed his one-man show ‘Zima Junction’ at literature festivals and theatres in the 1970s; a dramatisation of the poem by the Russian writer Yevtushenko.

Rodigan began his reggae broadcasting career in 1978 on BBC Radio London. He moved to Capital Radio in 1979 and remained there for eleven years broadcasting his legendary ‘Roots Rockers’ show every Saturday night. His credibility was ensured when he began clashing with Jamaica’s champion DJ, Barry G on JBC Radio in Jamaica. He then went on to clash with all the top Jamaican sound sys-tems in the West Indies, the USA and England.

In 1984 he joined BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Corp) where broadcast his weekly reggae show for 25 years until 2009.

In 1990 he joined the newly legalised Kiss 100 where he presented a variety of daytime shows for 10 years, followed by a decade in his evening specialist slot. When his show was pushed back to the small hours in a programming reshuffle, David took a bold stance, protesting against the marginalisa-tion of reggae music before leaving the station in a dramatic media frenzy in 2012. A day later the BBC came calling and signed David. For the last 3 years he has remarkably straddled two different worlds, broadcasting every Sunday evening on BBC 1Xtra to a largely youthful audience, whilst host-ing his Summer Series on BBC Radio 2 on Tuesdays.

In 2006 he was inducted into the Sony Radio Academy Hall Of Fame. He also won the Sony Radio Academy Gold Award for ‘Best Specialist Music Programme’ in 2009 for his Sunday night Kiss Show ‘Rodigan’s Reggae’ and a Silver Award in 2014 for his Radio 2 Summer Series.

He plays his unique collection of customised dub plates and classic recordings extensively across the globe from New York to Tokyo, Berlin to Kingston Jamaica to loyal reggae fans of all ages.

2012 was a truly vintage year for David. In Jan he was awarded an MBE for his services to broadcast-ing, in April he took home the World Cup Clash title in Queens NYC, and in May he was awarded his forth Sony Gold Award for his superb 13 part series on BBC Radio 2. 2012 also saw the launch of his 'Ram Jam' events brand, with David hosting numerous festival tents across Europe.

2014 saw David join forces with platinum selling act Chase & Status and the legendary Shy FX, under the collective name Rebel Sound, competing in the Red Bull Music Culture Clash at Earls Court infront of 25,000 fans plus another 2million streaming the event from the comfort of their own homes. Rebel Sound won the clash comprehensively and trended #1 on Twitter worldwide and were quickly invited to headline Reading & Leeds festival in 2015.

Mike Skinner

Plus NOISY DJ Set

Mike Skinner is the man behind the musical phenomenon that was The Streets for ten years. In that time he won an Ivor Novello, a Brit, and changed the sound of UK music forever. Now that he has retired the moniker of The Streets, Mike continues to push things forward with his genre bending DJ sets.
Reflecting his love of cutting edge sounds, Mike's musical selections are as eclectic as his production capabilities. From screwed down house to old skool hip hop via drum and bass bangers and peppered with his own, up the minute refixes, and classic tracks, Skinner never fails to ignite the party spirit.

Having built up a huge online fanbase for his Skinimix series of podcasts, there has been great demand to bring Mike's DJing skills into the clubs. Mike's personality as both an entertainer and a musical trendsetter has never been bigger. 'Original Pirate Material' was recently adjudged the album of the decade by The Guardian newspaper and similar accolades were afforded both 'OPM' and 'A Grand Don't Come for Free' by the NME.

Two of Skinner's protégé's from his record label The Beats, Professor Green and Example are now tearing up the charts in their own rights and his production talents have resulted in hits for such luminaries as Kano, Giggs and numerous remixes for people as varied as Ellie Goulding, Bloc Party, Sparks, Major Lazer and Benjamin Francis Leftwich.

All these production skills, and Mike's talent for spotting new musical movements early are firmly embedded in every DJ set.

Cody Matthews from up and coming Worthing band NOISY will be showcasing his DJing skills in support to Mike Skinner at Jungle on March 10th 2022. NOISY are for all the Friday guys, for all the 20-somethings smashing it on a weekend, spending five days aching and then getting out and doing it again. An antidote to all the other shit going on in the world.

Deptford Northern Soul Club are childhood friends, Will Foot and Lewis Henderson, whose early love of soul developed after discovering Lewis’ Dad’s record collection. After finally bringing their musical heritage to the forefront with their debut DJ set at Deptford’s Bunker Club 4 years ago, they have since taken their credible and unique club night around the UK, performing at the likes of Glastonbury festival and Green Man, alongside a residency at Manchester’s YES, their beloved Bunker Club and London’s Moth Club.

Whether behind a turntable, dancing out front or in discussion, their sheer love and passion for soul is infectious, as is the spark of friendship and mutual musical appreciation between the two of them. 27-years-old but with old heads on their sharply
dressed young shoulders, they have emerged as the new face of Northern Soul, bringing the movement back into the conversation of modern dance music.

In November 2019 they launched Deptford Northern Soul Club Records, a modern reissue label.

“After scouring record shops, markets and the internet for the best music for our sets we became increasingly frustrated at the cost and poor quality of the records that we wanted to play. Whilst being happy to use digital alternatives in their place, good quality WAVs for some of the more obscure tracks became near impossible to find. So, from day one we began to make a list of all the tracks we played out that were unobtainable on vinyl and those we could only have dreamt of playing that it seemed were lost to time. This list became the bedrock for Deptford Northern Soul Club Records, and with the help of Northern fans up and down the UK it grew to the point where we began searching for the rights and the highest quality audio to reissue. KTF!” - Will and Lewis

“There are no gimmicks here: just a love of all things Northern Soul.” NME

“The duo bringing northern soul back to the fore.” London in Stereo

“The crate-diggers placing rare soul in a fresh context.” Clash

“A very fresh approach to a genre that’s been a vital part of club nights for decades.” So Young

Andy C

+ Tonn Piper + Unglued

Andy C’s career has been nothing short of a phenomenon. An underground icon, he sold out both Wembley Arena in a few days, and a second 13 week residency at one of London’s most iconic contemporary clubs, XOYO, in less than 2 hours. He’s collected over 40 awards to date, with 2018 plaudits including DJ Mag (Best British DJ).

Andy regularly plays headline slots at the world’s greatest festivals including Creamfields, Glastonbury, EDC, Boomtown, and SW4. He continues to take his genre to new shores across the globe.

Andy’s fans are used to seeing his travels across the globe on social media, from arriving at a Las Vegas show in a helicopter, to larking about at 4am at a Midlands motorway service station sandwich display on the way back from a show with MC Tonn Piper. But as someone who’s been pretty much constantly on the road for 25 years, he takes his career very seriously. For XOYO, as he does each week, he spent hours at home mixing, practising, and putting together his sets with the care of someone who is as obsessed by the music he plays now as when he cut his teeth in his teens.

Andy’s success and status as a festival main stage headliner and DJ who guarantees sell-out roadblocks is driven by a phenomenal work ethic and the kind of tour schedule that makes rock bands look like part-timers. But as the owner and figurehead for Ram Records, Andy’s also nurtured and developed huge headline artists such as Chase & Status, Wilkinson and Sub Focus, turning it into one of the world’s most respected independent operations across recordings and events alike.

Andy’s main signature motif as a DJ is that he’s guaranteed to be packing tracks that no other DJ has. Hunting, digging, searching and signing: he is constantly immersed in new music. Not only does this ensure a wholly unique experience when you see him live, but it also gives Ram Records a front row seat when it comes to spotting new artists.

Norman-Jay_Twitter-Banner_V01.png

Norman Jay MBE is unquestionably one of most respected and popular DJs in the world today. Born in Notting Hill, Jay played his first gig aged 8 at a 10th birthday party. Influenced by his father’s record collection of blue beat, ska and jazz, by the late 1970s he was considered an emerging authority on contemporary Afro-American music including funk, disco, soul and jazz fusion.

During a series of late-70s trips to New York, visiting family, Norman was inspired by the city’s unique and vibrant club scene, and on his return to the UK teamed up with his brother, Joey, to build the Good Times Sound System, playing funk, soul and disco at Notting Hill Carnival. Cementing his reputation as co-founder of, and prime selector on, the then London pirate radio station KISS FM. Jay originally coined the term, and subsequently fostered the emerging ‘Rare Groove’ scene, filling the airwaves and many warehouse parties under his Shake and Fingerpop guises, with the best in 70s & 80s grooves and nascent house cuts. Pushing the boundaries of the UK’s emerging club culture he went on to co-found the first ‘Paradise Garage’ style club in Britain – ‘High On Hope’, and, alongside kindred spirit Gilles Peterson, Norman established the Talkin’ Loud label, spearheading the Acid Jazz scene.

Throughout the late 80s and 90s, Jay continued to build a reputation as one of the world’s most popular DJs, packing clubs to the rafters wherever he played, taking the underground sounds of rare groove and house firmly into the mainstream. The turn of the century saw Norman Jay assume the role of elder statesman, receiving an MBE from the Queen for services to deejaying and music.

Most recently he has taken his legendary Good Times parties to the East of London, sharing the carnival vibes with venues including St John at Hackney Church, Oval Space and Mick’s Garage. His latest compilation ‘Mister Good Times’ released with Sunday Best Recordings captures the true spirit of Good Times, ‘People who used to come to arrive early doors carnival will know exactly what this is about,” says Norman. Continuing his burgeoning work as a broadcaster, and playing an eclectic mix of black and dance music across the globe as the deejay’s DJ, Norman Jay remains at the forefront of club culture continually converting generations of clubbers to the cause, championing new sounds, yet never forgetting his musical roots, thus guaranteeing nothing but the ‘Good Times’.

After Selling Out The Factory back in February 2020; Judge Jules returns in September 2021...

He’s one DJ that has been there, done that and done it all again, and for almost three decades Judge Jules has led the way in the world of dance music. Since hitting the decks in 1987, Judge Jules has influenced an entire generation on Kiss FM and Radio 1 and continues to be on the playlists of millions with his weekly radio show The Global Warm Up, which notches up 750,000 downloads every single week via his podcast and is broadcast on over 80 stations around the world.

As a pioneer of the club scene, passion and persona behind the decks coupled with crowd connection and unrivalled mixing has earned Judge Jules unforgettable sets at the world’s most iconic clubs and festivals including Gatecrasher, Ministry of Sound, Global Gathering and Creamfields.

In the studio, Judge Jules has released over 100 tracks of which ten have reached the top 40 in the UK national charts with countless more gracing the upper reaches of the dance charts. He’s mixed compilations for Ministry of Sound, Universal and Warner Bros, which have racked up over 3 million sales, and he’s currently in the studio gearing up to drop a whole host of new beats for 2017.

Earning his place amongst DJ legends, Judge Jules has received accolades such as #1 DJ (Mixmag), Best International DJ (Dancestar Awards), Best Radio DJ (Smirnoff’s Dancestars), and has consistently featured in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll, peaking at #3 in the world, alongside the industry’s greatest.

Jules’ presence and reputation in Ibiza is legendary, and his famous brand, Judgement Fridays (formerly Judgement Sundays) is the longest standing DJ residency in Ibiza history. The night continues to pack out its Balearic home week in, week out over the summer season, totting up 16 years of events on the island.
Judge Jules is not planning on slowing down. Instead, he’s continuing to innovate and lead as he always has done taking the ‘Judgement’ brand to the next level in the form of a record label, and UK tour to influence a whole new generation of dance music lovers.

Having spent plenty of time locked away in the studio, 2016 saw a serious return to form in terms of productions with the launch of his own ‘Judgement Recordings’ and releases on Coldharbour Recordings, Sirup Music and more. With tracks like ‘Turn On The Lights’, ‘Burn In The Sun’, ‘With A Song’ and ‘Te Quiero’ all gaining high profile support and on chart placements on Beatport, Jules is still very much at the top of his game both behind the decks and in the studio.

With his early ambitions earning him the name Judge Jules, the legal world has become something of a backbone throughout his entire career and having re-trained whilst on tour, during part of the week, in addition to his DJ travels, Jules is a music lawyer with Sheridans, advising labels, DJs, artists and a wide range of other music industry folk. Jules has also lent his expertise in the legal field to a regular ‘Industry Insiders’ column in Mixmag offering advice to up and coming DJs and artists."Phases come and go, genres are born and laid to rest in the blink of an eye, but one thing is for certain… Judge Jules is here to stay...
